August State University, located in Augusta, Georgia is a public four year university. As the oldest university in Georgia, Augusta State University was chartered in 1783 as the Academy of Richmond County. The college finally opened in 1785 with collegiate level classes offered. During the Civil War classes were suspended and for a time the college was used as a hospital.

In 1909 operation of the academy passed to the Augusta Board of Education. After this time, enrollment increased. In 1958, the name was changed to August College and in 1963 the college became a four year university. Finally, in 1996 the college was renamed as Augusta State University. A number of developments have taken place at Augusta State University in the last several years including more than $90 in brand new construction. The improvements at Augusta State University include construction of Allgood Hall, University Hall and a new science building.

Three colleges comprise Augusta State University. The three colleges of Augusta State University are the James M. Hull College of Business, the Katherine Reese Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Education.
